Defence (in the context of litigation)
A formal court document forming part of the pleadings in a civil matter, filed and served by the defendant on the plaintiff and contesting the facts set out in the statement of claim. The defence will consist of an answer to a civil claim by which the defendant seeks to be absolved from liability for some legally recognised reason excusing or justifying the conduct leading to the claim.
