Directions hearing (in the context of litigation)
A directions hearing is a brief hearing before a registrar or judge (NSW) where directions in relation to a proceeding are ordered for the purpose of progressing the matter and instructing all parties. In a proceeding, there may be multiple directions hearings as needed. Usually at the first directions hearing, the registrar or judge will ensure all parties are aware of the commencement of the case and its particulars, and order mediation. Further directions hearings usually take place after mediation, or if directions from previous hearings have not been adhered to. Directions hearings take place in the Federal Circuit Court.
