Magistrates Court Vic
The Magistrates Court of Victoria is an inferior court in the Victorian judicial hierarchy. There is no jury, and each matter is heard and determined by a judicial officer (e.g. a Magistrate). Similar to the Local Court of NSW the Magistrates Court of Victoria has both a civil and criminal jurisdiction.
Matters appealed from the Magistrates Court of Victoria are heard in the County Court of Victoria.
The civil jurisdiction can determine most disputes over money or property up to the value of $100,000 however in certain circumstances the court can hear cases with an unlimited jurisdiction. The civil jurisdiction of the Magistrates Court of Victoria is divided into three categories: General Civil Jurisdiction, Industrial Division and Workcover List.
