Traverse (in the context of litigation)
A term for the denial of a material allegation made by the opposite party, usually during pleading. Where a defendant denies a statement of fact critical to the plaintiff’s case, he is said to ‘traverse’ it, and the plea itself can then be referred to as a ‘traverse’.
